NIA begins probe into Manipur Violence cases

Guwahati, Nov 26: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has initiated comprehensive investigations into three major cases connected to the recent wave of violence in Manipur. This action follows the Union Ministry of Home Affairs’ (MHA) directive to bring the perpetrators to justice promptly.

The NIA re-registered the cases on November 13, 2024, after the MHA deemed it necessary to transfer the investigations to the agency, considering the severity of the crimes and the need to uncover the broader conspiracy behind the brutal attacks.

Case 1: Borobekra Killings and Arson

Originally registered as FIR No. 29(11) at Borobekra PS, the first case pertains to the tragic events of November 11, 2024, where several houses were set on fire, and two civilians were killed in Borobekra. Additionally, six individuals, including three women and three children, were abducted and murdered by unknown militants.

The violence began when armed militants attacked Borobekra Police Station and nearby homes and shops in Jakuradhor Karong, setting them ablaze. Police and CRPF personnel responded, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire. A subsequent search uncovered two bodies inside the charred houses.

The NIA has re-registered this case as RC-15/2024/NIA/IMP under the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and the Arms Act, 1959.

Case 2: Attack on CRPF Post

The second case involves an attack on November 11, 2024, targeting a CRPF post at Jakuradhor Karong and Borobekra police stations by armed militants. Initially filed as FIR No. 30(11) at Borobekra PS, the attack left a CRPF constable injured, who was subsequently evacuated to Silchar for treatment.

Security forces later discovered bodies of unidentified armed militants and recovered weapons and ammunition near the site of the attack. The NIA has re-registered this case as RC-14/2024/NIA/IMP under the BNS, 2023, and the Arms Act, 1959.

Case 3: Brutal Murder of Zosangkim

The third case pertains to the horrific murder of Zosangkim, a 31-year-old woman from Jairolpokpi, Jiribam, on November 7, 2024. Armed militants reportedly raped and burned her alive at her residence. Zosangkim, a mother of three, was the wife of Ngurthansang.

The case was initially filed as FIR No. 80(11)2024 at Jiribam PS on November 8, 2024. It has since been re-registered by the NIA as RC-13/2024/NIA/IMP under the BNS, 2023, the Arms Act, 1959, and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UA(P) Act).

Investigation Progress

NIA teams visited the crime scenes on November 21 and 22, 2024, and have commenced their investigations. The process of transferring case documents from local police to the NIA is currently underway.
