Shillong, Jan 9: The National People’s Party (NPP) exuded confidence that anti-incumbency factor would not affect the party in the upcoming autonomous district council (ADC) elections in Khasi and Jaintia Hills.
“There is no anti-incumbency that is working against the NPP,” NPP national general secretary and deputy chief minister Sniawbhalang Dhar said on Wednesday.
“Even if it is there, we will have to work hard,” Dhar said while reacting to the recent decision by sitting Mawlai MDC Teiborlang Pathaw to quit the party just ahead of the election.
The elections to Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) will be held on February 21.
Claiming that there are many who want to contest from the NPP, he said, “Somebody wants to go and somebody wants to come, that is the usual process during elections.”
“We are ready to go for election and hopefully we will get a good majority,” he said.
On any threat posed by the nascent Voice of the People Party (VPP), which upset political equations by winning the Shillong Lok Sabha seat in the parliamentary elections last year, Dhar said, “No, they (VPP) are not (a threat to NPP) as it is different from one constituency to another. It is not the same formula, not the same system…”
“Our expectation is that we will form the EC on our own in both the ADCs in Khasi and Jaintia Hills,” he added.
