NPP doesn’t poach, it inspires: Rakkam

Shillong, Aug 5: The National People’s Party (NPP), boosted by the lone Congress member in the assembly coming to its fold, has refuted allegations of poaching MLAs of other political parties.

“NPP doesn’t poach, NPP inspires,” said NPP leader and cabinet minister Rakkam A Sangma on Monday.

“If somebody is excited or is inspired, nobody can stop (them from joining NPP),” he said while speaking to reporters here.

Sangma welcomed the recent joining of the lone Congress legislator from Mylliem, Ronnie V Lyngdoh.

Admitting that senior leaders joining the NPP is a significant boost to the party and its workers, Sangma refuted allegations about NPP indulging in poaching of MLAs of other political parties.

He attributed other political party leaders shifting allegiance to NPP to inspiring leadership and developmental activities.

Crediting chief minister Conrad K Sangma for inspiring people to join the NPP, he said, “Dynamic leadership of the chief minister and top leaders of the party is inspiring,” he said.

Asked about the opposition’s role, Sangma said while the opposition is important, it should be constructive.

Currently, the opposition has nine members (TMC – 5 & VPP – 4) in the 60 member assembly.
