Shillong, Sept 24: The National People’s Party (NPP) has refuted social media reports that claimed a possible political realignment in Meghalaya, citing 24 NPP MLAs camping in New Delhi to meet BJP leaders.
“I have seen reports circulating on social media claiming that 24 NPP MLAs are in Delhi to meet BJP leaders to bring about a political change in Meghalaya. These reports are not true,” said Daniel Thangkhiew, treasurer and political secretary to the Chief Minister.
“They are merely an attempt by certain individuals to mislead the people of Meghalaya,” Thangkhiew said over the phone from Delhi.
Asserting that NPP remains united, he said Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma had met NPP MLAs in Shillong only a few days ago.
However, he mentioned that the Chief Minister and both the Deputy Chief Ministers – Prestone Tynsong and Sniawbhalang Dhar – are currently in Delhi on official visit.
“The Chief Minister and both Deputy Chief Ministers are in Delhi to meet senior officials of the Central Government and follow up on various projects concerning Meghalaya. Their visit has nothing to do with political discussions, as is being circulated by certain individuals on social media,” he said.
Thangkhiew further said NPP MLAs and MDCs remain united and are currently focused on preparations for the upcoming Lok Sabha bye-election and the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections.
He said the party is working to ensure that its candidates emerge victorious in the elections.
On the recent joining of eight UDP MLAs by the BJP, Thangkhiew said the development would have no impact on the NPP-led state government, noting that both parties remain constituents of the Conrad K Sangma-led MDA-II government.
