Guwahati, Jun 30: A suspected international gold smuggling network has been busted in Guwahati by Assam Police and one held with over 37 kg of gold worth Rs 54 crore, in the largest such haul by the force, an official statement said on Tuesday.
It said smuggling links to the Middle East and Myanmar with domestic network across different cities, have been revealed, with further investigation on.
The Assam Police statement said a raid was carried out in Kharghuli area of the city on June 29-30, leading to the seizure and arrest.
Suspected gold bars/ pieces weighing 37.064 kg and worth over Rs 54 crore were seized during the operation.
Also recovered during the raid were 13 grams of silver nodules/flakes, four mobile phones, Rs 3,755 cash and bags used for concealment.
One accused, hailing from Sangli in Maharashtra, who was staying in Guwahati, has been arrested, the statement said, adding that he had no legal documents for the consignment.
It said investigation has revealed international gold smuggling links to the Middle East and Myanmar, with domestic connections to Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Bangalore.
“We are still investigating further links to unearth the full syndicate, past deliveries and financial trails,” the statement added. (PTI)
