Over 87,000 ST students get scholarships ahead of schedule

Quicker disbursement with adoption of SNA-SPARSH system

Shillong, Sept 2: Over 87,000 tribal students of Meghalaya have received their post-matric scholarships as Rs 91 crore has been credited to their bank accounts, completing the online payment process ahead of schedule.

The funds, released under the Umbrella Post-Matric Scholarship for Scheduled Tribe Students for 2025–26 academic year, reached beneficiaries within three to four working days, against the five to six days indicated by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma while releasing the funds at Shillong College on August 27.

The quicker disbursement was possible after Meghalaya shifted to the SNA-SPARSH system, which routes payments directly from the Reserve Bank of India to beneficiaries’ bank accounts, the Education Department said.

A total of 96,812 applications were verified for the year. While 87,691 students have received the scholarship, payments to 9,121 students remain pending because their Aadhaar is not linked to their bank accounts or due to other problems with their bank details.

The government said the money earmarked for these students has not been cancelled and will be released once the account details are corrected.

Students who are yet to receive the scholarship have been asked to approach their banks and ensure that their Aadhaar is linked to their accounts.
