A spectacular fusion of heritage, pride & progress

Guwahati, Feb 24: Prime Minister Narendra Modi set the stage ablaze at the historic Jhumoir Binandini 2025 event at Sarusajai Sports Complex, Guwahati, as he immersed himself in the grandeur of Assam’s tea garden culture. The electrifying event witnessed a record-breaking Jhumoir performance by nearly 9,000 artists, captivating 61 foreign delegates and a packed audience.

Modi, receiving a rousing welcome, expressed his deep connection with Assam’s tea industry, stating, “This tremendous preparation carries the fragrance and beauty of the tea gardens. And who knows tea better than a chaiwala?” His remarks struck a chord with the audience, reinforcing his government’s commitment to Assam’s cultural and economic prosperity.

A historic evening of cultural grandeur

Modi lauded the Assam government and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for orchestrating the spectacular event, underscoring that the tea tribe and Adivasi communities are integral to Assam’s identity. Recalling his 2023 visit, where 11,000 artists performed the Bihu Dance, he noted that Jhumoir Binandini 2025 would similarly make history.

Highlighting key milestones, he proudly announced the long-awaited recognition of Assamese as a classical language and celebrated Charaideo Moidam’s inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage list. He also reiterated his role as a ‘cultural ambassador’ for the Northeast, citing his stay in Kaziranga and his efforts to promote Assam’s biodiversity on a global scale.

Honouring Assam’s legacy

Modi paid tribute to Assam’s legendary warrior Lachit Borphukan, recalling the grandeur of his 400th birth anniversary celebrations and the Republic Day parade tableau. He also acknowledged the installation of a 125-foot bronze statue of Borphukan and the introduction of Janjatiya Gaurav Divas to honor India’s tribal warriors.

Empowering Assam’s tea workers & tribal communities

Reaffirming his commitment to the tea industry, Modi announced increased bonuses for Assam Tea Corporation workers to enhance their earnings. He also announced ₹15,000 assistance for around 1.5 lakh pregnant women in tea gardens.

He said over 350 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs established in tea gardens for improved medical access.

He further said 3% OBC quota reservation for Tea Tribe youth and ₹25,000 assistance for self-employment initiatives.

Modi expressed confidence that these measures would not only uplift Assam’s tea workers but also propel the Northeast’s overall development. The evening ended on a high note as Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma presented PM Modi with traditional gifts, symbolizing Assam’s rich cultural heritage.

A star-studded celebration of Assam’s heritage

The event witnessed the presence of Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Union Ministers S. Jaishankar and Sarbananda Sonowal, Tripura CM Manik Saha, and Union MoS Pabitra Margherita.
