POCSO: Assam court sentences man to 20 years RI for rape of 5-year-old

Guwahati, May 9: A court in Assam’s Biswanath district has sentenced a 23-year-old man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for the rape of a five-year-old girl in 2021.

The convict, Bishal Thapa, son of Bom Bahadur Thapa, is a resident of Gohain Chapori under Sootea Police Station. The crime took place under Sootea’s jurisdiction and was registered as Sootea PS Case No. 01/2021 under Section 4(2) of the POCSO Act.

After a detailed investigation by then Officer-in-Charge SI Kalpajit Sharma, Thapa was arrested and tried under relevant provisions of the POCSO Act.

Delivering the verdict on Thursday, District and Sessions Judge Bobita Kshetry found him guilty and handed down a 20-year sentence along with a fine of ₹15,000.

Special Public Prosecutor Moushumi Borthakur led the prosecution. The judgement reinforces the judiciary’s strong stance on crimes against children in Assam.
