POCSO court sentences man to 10-year jail term

Shillong, Jan 22: One Jogitar Japang has been convicted and sentenced to ten-year imprisonment for sexually assaulting a minor girl in 2018.

On November 17, 2018, an FIR was registered at Rynjah Police Station Jogitar Japang for offences under Sections 354/354A/354AB/376(2)(f)(j) of the IPC and relevant sections of the POCSO Act.

The forty-three-year-old man was arrested and a charge sheet was filed on June 8, 2020 after investigation. During the trial, he remained in judicial custody for three months and one day.

In its judgment passed on January 20, MK Lyngdoh, Special Judge (POCSO), East Khasi Hills convicted and sentenced Japang to serve the remaining nine years, eight months, and twenty‑nine days in jail, totaling a ten‑year imprisonment for the offence.

The investigation was conducted by WPSI Lily D Sangma, currently posted at Sadar Police Station, East Khasi Hills, Shillong.
