Police await post-mortem report of 7-year-old boy

Motive behind sensational murder not established yet

Shillong, Oct 13: Even as no culprit behind the murder of a seven-year-old boy Kyrshanbor Kharmudai could be nabbed yet, police are awaiting the post-mortem report to determine the nature of his injuries.

“The investigation is progressing, and we are waiting for the post-mortem report to get a clearer picture of how the child died,” East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem told reporters on Monday.

The boy went missing from his house at Nongrah here on October 8 and his body was recovered from Mawpat the next day.

Informing about the possible nature of injuries, he said it could be either ante-mortem or post-mortem.

“Usually, if the body is exposed for a long time, it will have post-mortem injuries… from the various elements of nature,” he said.

Stating that the motive behind the murder is still unclear, he said police are exploring various possibilities, including ransom, sexual assault, etc.

The SIT has not ruled out any possibility, he said.

“The motive to kill a child is very difficult to establish,” he said, adding, “It is very important to first establish the motive of killing the 7-year-old child.”

On the speculation about “menshohnoh” or witchcraft theory surrounding the murder, the SP said in most cases, such allegations are rooted in enmity, jealousy, ransom or vendetta, rather than supernatural beliefs.

“I have never come across a case at least in my service career that a person being drained out of blood because he is a menshohnoh…We have investigated many cases of menshohnoh allegations, and the root cause is usually different altogether,” he stated.
