Police confirm identify of skeleton found in Ri Bhoi

Shillong, Sept 10: The police have identified the skeleton found in a forest area near the 6th Battalion, Umran Niangbyrnai, in Ri Bhoi district to that of a man from Ummar village, who had gone missing since June 11, 2025.

The remains were found by woodcutters on Tuesday evening and the villagers subsequently informed the Umsning Police Station.

The police retrieved the remains and the identity of the deceased was confirmed through personal belongings, including his clothes and mobile phone, as well as the SIM card registered in his name, police said.

Family members verified that the remains belonged to the missing man, they said.

The man was reported missing after he alighted from a vehicle while returning from Shillong to his native village in Ri Bhoi.

According to police, the exact circumstances surrounding his disappearance and death are still under investigation.
