QR code on excise products to plug revenue leakage

Shillong, Sept 26: To plug revenue leakage, a QR code based tracking system will be launched for various products sold by the excise department and this is expected to increase the revenue generation by 5 to 10 per cent.

“In simple terms, every bottle to be sold in Meghalaya will have a QR code on it. This will help us to track the entire journey of the bottle,” said chief minister Conrad K Sangma after a cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

The QR code will help the authorities know exactly in which shop the product was sold, thus plugging any leakage in the system.

“With this, we are expecting a 5% to 10% impact on the overall revenue,” the CM said.

He, meanwhile, informed that the state’s excise revenue went up three times compared to what it was in 2017.

“We have 3 times higher revenue because of the steps taken in the past five years.” he said while expressing the hope that the QR code will help monitor the leakages and increase the revenue further.

Composite License

The cabinet also approved a proposal for issuing composite license for hotels keeping in view the number of hotels, especially 5 Star hotels, coming up in the state.

Earlier, the licenses were given to different hotels on the basis of number of restaurants or bars in the hotel – separate license for each bar or restaurant in the hotel.

Composite license, on the other hand, IS given to the entire entity and no need to apply for separate licenses for bars and restaurants within the property.

“Obviously, charges for these licenses are going to be higher compared to normal bar licenses,” he said.
