Shillong Municipal Board issues vending certificates to street vendors
Shillong, Jan 27: Relocation of hawkers from the streets of Khyndailad has not made much headway with the government trying to find an amicable way to ensure obstruction-free streets and footpaths while not affecting the hawkers’ livelihood.
Assuring to take all stakeholders in confidence in taking any further step, deputy chief minister in-charge Urban Affairs Sniawbhalang Dhar reiterated the government’s commitment to solve the contentious issue of hawker relocation as per the law.
“Everything will be done by the law. We will try to take everyone on board. If complications arise, we’ll solve them together,” he said.
The relocation plan, which aims to streamline urban spaces and enhance public convenience, has triggered resistance from hawkers, with protests erupting across the city.
Members of Meghalaya & Greater Shillong Progressive Hawkers and Street Vendors Association (MGSPHSVA) staged a demonstration outside Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) office on Friday.
The protesters while opposing plans to move them from Khyndai Lad to newly designated vending zones accused the government of not being transparent on the decisions taken on the matter.
“We demand immediate action and clarity on the relocation process. The government must address our concerns before moving forward,” association representative Shane Thabah said while expressing resentment over non-formation of Town Vending Committee.
Responding to the hawkers’ grievances, the minister said, “The government is building confidence among stakeholders. There may be issues in a few places, but we are making adjustments.”
On a reporter notification to relocate the hawkers on February 7, the minister said, “It is not confirmed yet. We will assess the situation before taking any final decision.”
He also assured that dialogue remains a priority. “Stakeholders are always welcome to discuss their concerns. If there’s resistance, we will engage with them properly,” Dhar said.
The government’s relocation plan envisions designated vending zones equipped with modern amenities near the MUDA Complex.
These zones aim to provide better facilities for vendors while improving urban organization for the public. To facilitate the transition, the SMB has been issuing vending certificates since January 15.
