Final voter turnout: JHADC – 85.58%, KHADC – 76.77%
Shillong, Feb 23: Repoll in four polling stations in East Jaintia Hills was conducted peacefully on Saturday with the JHADC recording final voter turnout of 85.58 per cent and the KHADC 76.77 per cent.
The elections to 58 district council constituencies, 29 each in Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) concluded on Friday.
Under JHADC, Sumer constituency witnessed the highest voter turnout of 91.46 per cent while Jowai North recorded the lowest voter turnout, 75.28 per cent.
In polling station wise voter turnout, Maskut polling station under Moodymmai-Nongkhroh constituency performed the best with 99.52 per cent while Khaddum polling station under Saipung-Nongkhlieh constituency came last with 51.34 per cent turnout.
Meanwhile, voters came in good numbers for the repoll conducted amid heavy security deployment in four polling stations in East Jaintia Hills district.
Wapung Skur A and Wapung Skur polling stations under Musniang-Rangad constituency witnessed 85.12 per cent and 83.33 per cent turnout respectively.
The voter turnout at Bataw A and Bataw B under Bataw-Lakadong constituency was 80.58 per cent and 77.43 per cent respectively.
The District Council Affairs (DCA) department, which is overseeing the autonomous district council (ADC) polls, ordered the repoll after unidentified mobs forcibly entered the polling stations and damaged the electronic voting machines (EVMs) on Friday.
In KHADC, Nongspung-Sohiong constituency in East Khasi Hills recorded the highest voting percentage at 86.09 per cent while Nongthymmai constituency in Ri Bhoi district recorded the lowest at 59.75 per cent.
The polling station with the highest voter turnout is Maw-Ah under Langkyrdem-Laitkroh at 96.99 per cent and the polling station with the lowest voter turnout is Madanrting Thembasuk Rum A under Nongthymmai at 4.49%.
There were 272 candidates for the ADC polls with 158 in fray in KHADC and 114 in JHADC. Among them there are 12 women in KHADC and 7 women JHADC. Both the Councils have 29 seats each for contest.
The counting of polls will be held on February 24.
