Shillong, Nov 2: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has expressed his happiness over the JPC on the FCRA Bill accepting his request to hold a sitting in Shillong to get the views of stakeholders form the North East on the sensitive issue.
Providing a background, the Chief Minister on Monday disclosed that he had called up the JPC chairman Sanjay Jaiswal immediately after he took over the job.
“When he took over, I immediately called him and requested that he should come to Shillong,” he said.
The Chief Minister said he had offered to facilitate a JPC meeting in Shillong to get views of the different organisations and religious organisations that are receiving funding from foreign agencies.
“He was very happy and immediately agreed. That is why they are here today and yesterday,” Sangma said while informing about his old acquaintance with Jaiswal as a fellow parliamentarian in the past.
“During my time in Parliament in 2016, I had grown a very strong bond with him and with many of the MPs but somehow we really used to get along very well. So I was very happy when he was made the chairman of the JPC and he is definitely the right person because of his experience, his seniority and he is a person who understands the pulse of the nation as a whole,” Sangma said.
The Chief Minister said he met the committee at the airport before they left.
“…what is important is that all stakeholders who had concerns got a chance to express their concerns. I was told the JPC was very open-minded and discussed all aspects…,” he said.
“It is a very healthy democratic process that took place and I am sure we will see some positive outcomes,” he added.
