Researchers urged to apply Nanotechnology in healthcare, clean energy

Shillong, Oct 9: The Department of Nanotechnology, North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) on Thursday celebrated International Nanotechnology Day with great enthusiasm and participation from students, research scholars, and faculty members.

The event highlighted the transformative role of nanotechnology in shaping the future of science and society while also paying tribute to the recent Nobel Prize in Chemistry (2025) awarded to Omar M. Yaghi, Susumu Kitagawa, and Richard Robson for their pioneering contributions to the development of Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs).

In his address as chief guest, Prof Md. Iftekhar Hussain, Dean, School of Technology, NEHU, emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary research and encouraged young researchers to explore the societal applications of nanotechnology, particularly in healthcare, clean energy, and environmental sustainability.

He also spoke on quantum computing through nanotechnological interventions and molecular interactions.

In his welcome address, Dr. Davidson Pyngrope, Department of Nanotechnology, set the tone of the celebration and reflected on the growing significance of nanotechnology in areas such as materials, medicine, and electronics. This was followed by an experience-sharing session by a student, which brought forth the perspective of the younger generation engaged in nanoscience research.

Dr. Shruti Shukla, Head of the Department, addressed the gathering and underscored the department’s commitment to frontier research and innovation in nanotechnology. She highlighted the multidisciplinary aspects of research in nanotechnology and its application in various fields. Prof. Sirsendu Sekhar Ray also spoke, highlighting global research trends and collaborative opportunities in this dynamic field.

The session concluded with a Vote of Thanks proposed by Phlegon Syndai, Research Scholar, expressing gratitude to the dignitaries, speakers, and participants.

The event featured a scientific lecture delivered by Dr. Abdul Moyez, University of Electronic Science & Technology of China, who shared insights into cutting-edge advancements in nanomaterials and their wide-ranging applications.

The celebration not only marked International Nanotechnology Day but also inspired participants to reflect on the transformative potential of nanoscience, while honoring the groundbreaking contributions of the 2025 Nobel Laureates in Chemistry.
