Response from Assam side not encouraging: Paul

Joint visit to Langpih border

Shillong, Dec 21: The response from Assam side towards resumption of the dialogue for settlement of inter-state boundary in Langpih sector has not been encouraging, said cabinet minister Paul Lyngdoh, who is also chairman of the Regional Committee for West Khasi Hills.

He said he has been in touch with his Assam counterpart for resuming discussion on Langpih, one of the remaining unresolved six areas of difference shared between Meghalaya and Assam.

“I would like to share with you that the fact that this sentiment was also conveyed to our counterparts in Assam,” said Lyngdoh on Friday.

“At DC level, the DC of West Khasi Hills has taken up with the DC of Kamrup district. I have also taken up the matter with the chairman Patowary (Assam cabinet minister Chandra Mohan Patowary).  So far the response has not been encouraging…,” he said.

However, Lyngdoh said, “We would like the conversation to continue and hopefully we will be in a position to meet very soon.”

Earlier in October, Lyngdoh informed that the final report will be submitted to the state government only after a joint visit with the Assam counterpart to the disputed areas under Langpih sector.

He said the regional committee headed by him had already shared with Assam documents to establish Meghalaya’s claims over the 54 villages under Langpih sector during the last meeting held in Shillong.

At that time, he also noted that the response from Assam side has been positive.

“We just need to cross one more hurdle, which is a visit to the affected areas, so that we are also able to meet the residents of the affected areas. That is the only hitch that remains, which we are yet to cross,” he said.
