Shillong, Aug 20: KHADC member from Laban-Mawprem constituency Ricky Shullai has requested the Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh to conduct a joint inspection with the stakeholders including local dorbars of the Shillong Peak Ropeway project following the alleged felling of trees near the catchment areas thereby posing a threat to the water security of the area.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Shullai said that while the project has local support, recent tree felling near a critical catchment area has raised concerns about water security and environmental impact.
He also referred to the recent orders passed by the Meghalaya High Court which had appointed Special Officers to inspect the site in connection with the PIL filed by Geraldine G Shabong.
“While this is important, the local dorbars and true stakeholders have not been involved in this process,” Shullai said.
“Therefore, I requested the minister to arrange a joint inspection with all stakeholders – including the local Durbar Shnongs, community leaders, and the Tourism Department – so that the project can proceed transparently and in the interest of both development and environmental protection,” he added.
Shullai stressed the importance of community involvement in the project’s development, ensuring that it benefits the local youth and promotes tourism while respecting community concerns.
“The people of the area have always supported the project since the 2022 agreement between the Government of Meghalaya and the Riat Laban Durbar Pyllun, and we continue to welcome it,” he said adding “The Shillong Peak Ropeway is a landmark project that can transform tourism and create opportunities for our youth. But it must move forward in a way that is inclusive, transparent, and respectful of community concerns.”
Shullai also submitted a memorandum to Lyngdoh, who is also holding charge of textiles department, requesting allocation of land for setting up a Fire Service Station at the Mulberry Seed Production Centre in Lawsohtun.
The fire station’s establishment has been pending due to land ownership disputes at Maxwellton, Kench’s Trace.
Shullai emphasized the urgent need for the fire station, citing safety concerns and emergency response gaps in the Raid Laban area.
The proposed location would also serve adjoining areas and is strategically important due to its proximity to the ongoing Ropeway Project.
The government had sanctioned the creation of various posts and financial provisions for the fire station in 2021, but the project remains stalled.
