Rs. 28 crore drug haul in Assam, Mizoram: Two Myanmar nationals among four arrested

Guwahati, July 29: In a significant blow to cross-border drug trafficking networks, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized narcotics worth approximately Rs. 28 crores in two high-stakes operations in Assam and Mizoram. Four individuals, including two Myanmar nationals, were arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

The first operation took place on July 25 in the Hailakandi district of Assam. Acting on precise intelligence, DRI officers intercepted a Mahindra TUV300 at Katakhal. A search of the vehicle uncovered 160 soap cases filled with 1,813 grams of heroin and two packets of methamphetamine tablets weighing 2 kilograms. The drugs were concealed in expertly crafted compartments, requiring a trained mechanic for extraction.

The next day, in a coordinated follow-up, officers intercepted a Maruti Eeco van at Sakei Bangla in Mizoram’s Champhai district. Hidden inside specially modified cavities in the vehicle’s seats were another 160 soap cases containing 1,920 grams of heroin.

According to officials, the seized narcotics had been smuggled into Mizoram from Myanmar via the porous Indo-Myanmar border and were en route to other parts of India.

These operations are part of DRI’s ongoing crackdown on narcotics in the Northeast. Since January 2025, the agency has seized drugs worth over Rs. 346 crores across the region. A total of 27 cases have been registered, leading to the arrest of 48 individuals and the seizure of 25 vehicles.

Authorities say the back-to-back busts underscore the increasing sophistication of trafficking methods and the urgent need for enhanced vigilance along international borders.
