Shillong, Aug 17: Former education minister and UDP MLA Lakhmen Rymbui has refuted the Voice of the People Party’s (VPP) allegations of government apathy towards education sector in the state.
Asserting that the government has made all out efforts to reform the long-neglected education sector, Rymbui said the sector is moving in the right direction though not without challenges.
Admitting gaps still remaining in areas such as infrastructure, connectivity, and electrification, he highlighted the steps being taken by the government to address the issues.
“The government had invested in solar power for schools, appointed teachers, and placed a draft framework on managing different categories of schools in the public domain,” he said.
The former education minister expressed confidence the deficiencies would be addressed within two to three years and students would get quality education in the state.
Earlier, the VPP alleged that numerous government schools still run without regular teachers, while deficit institutions struggle due to delay in appointments.
The party also alleged government move to privatise education through National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the proposed Meghalaya Education Grant (MEG).
Retired teachers have not been paid their dues even years after retirement, it alleged.
