Safer Internet Day observed with awareness campaign in Garo Hills

Ampati, Feb 12: South West Garo Hills joined the global Safer Internet Day movement with a powerful awareness campaign, spearheaded by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) under the ISEA Project, in partnership with the National Informatics Centre (NIC) and the District Administration.

The event, held at the DRDA Conference Hall in Ampati, on Wednesday, focused on empowering government officials, department staff, teachers, and students with crucial cyber hygiene and online safety knowledge.

The day’s highlight was a compelling keynote address by Hema Nayak, Deputy Commissioner of South West Garo Hills. Nayak eloquently explored the dual nature of the internet, acknowledging its immense opportunities while addressing the inherent challenges.

She stressed the importance of responsible online conduct, outlined effective cybercrime reporting mechanisms, and inspired attendees to become active participants in building a safer digital ecosystem.

The event boasted a distinguished gathering of senior district officials and magistrates, along with officials representing the Education, Agriculture, Social Welfare, and Rural Development Departments.

During the programme, a dynamic and informative presentation by the District Informatics Officer (DIO), NIC, brought the realities of cyber threats into sharp focus. The session equipped participants with practical strategies for mitigating these threats, detailed cybercrime reporting procedures, and showcased valuable government resources, including the “Stay Safe Online” platform (www.staysafeonline.in). The presentation wasn’t just theoretical; it offered tangible takeaways for immediate application.
This year’s Safer Internet Day theme, “Together for a Better Internet,” resonated deeply throughout the event. It emphasized the shared responsibility of individuals, institutions, and governing bodies in creating a secure digital environment for everyone.
