Shillong, Sept 22: Newly admitted Ph.D. scholars of the 2024-B batch were provided an insightful lecture covering crucial topics such as research methodology, ethical principles, and research integrity during the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) orientation programme, on Friday.
The event was graced by eminent resource persons who shared their profound insights on various aspects of research during the programme titled Quality Research Ethics and Integrity.
The event commenced with a welcome address by Prof GD Sharma, Vice-Chancellor USTM who emphasised the importance of selecting a relevant research domain and adapting to rapidly advancing technologies in research. He encouraged the scholars to embrace innovation and uphold high standards in their academic pursuits.
In the first session, Prof. Subhendu Sekhar Bag from the Department of Chemistry, IIT Guwahati, delivered an insightful lecture covering crucial topics such as research methodology, ethical principles, and research integrity. He provided a comprehensive overview of research methodology, stressing the importance of conducting quality research and maintaining ethical standards. Following this, Prof. Deepak Bhagat from NEHU shared valuable guidance on academic integrity and quality publications. He focused on the connection between good research practices and successful outcomes and also shared advice on identifying suitable journals for publication and the ethical considerations of plagiarism, breaking down various forms such as text, self, and idea plagiarism.
Concluding the session, USTM advisor Prof RK Sarma provided vital insights into strategies for publishing in UGC CARE journals, the importance of thorough literature reviews, and how to navigate the complexities of plagiarism. The second session was led by Dr. AH Barbhuiya, Academic Registrar, who delivered a motivational speech encouraging scholars to maintain a healthy work-life balance throughout their research journey. He underscored the importance of research methodology as the backbone of all research activities. The Deans of various schools, including Prof. Gayatree Goswamee, Prof. Thagiram Gogoi, and Dr. Rashmimala Kakati, also offered words of encouragement, sharing their perspectives on the research journey and offering valuable advice to the new scholars.
