Shillong, Apr 5: The long-awaited expansion of Shillong Airport at Umroi is soon going to become a reality –Airports Authority of India (AAI) has floated tender for the work estimated at Rs 119.44 crore.
Expansion of the existing runway up to 2,400 metres will facilitate landing of larger A-320 aircraft in the airport.
For this, the current runway shall be expanded by 571 metres besides expansion of the terminal building and apron, along with various associated infrastructure works.
As per the tender notice, the mega project is expected for completion in 18 months, including a three-month window for monsoons.

The AAI had submitted the draft master plan for airport expansion in August 2024, and the land acquisition process for additional 22 acre required for the project is under way.
Meanwhile, the state government has termed it a landmark development for the state’s infrastructure and connectivity landscape.
“The move comes as a direct outcome of the consistent and strategic efforts led by chief minister Conrad K Sangma, who has made improved air connectivity one of the topmost priorities of his government,” stated an official press release.
Welcoming the floating of tender for airport expansion, the chief minister said, “This is a moment of great satisfaction and optimism for Meghalaya. It is the result of our consistent efforts over the past several years.”
He also stated that improved air connectivity not only ensures convenience, but also helps transform lives, boost tourism, attract investments, and create opportunities for the youth.
“Once complete, this project along with our efforts to enhance connectivity and tourism activities in the state, will be a game changer for the people of Meghalaya,” he said.
Ever since assuming office, chief minister Conrad K Sangma has taken up the matter of Shillong Airport’s expansion with the Centre at multiple levels, stated the official release.

It also mentioned about the state government’s large-scale investments in tourism sector, with a commitment of nearly ₹4,000 crore to develop new tourism circuits and strengthen existing ones.
“The government is also actively mobilising private sector investments, including plans for setting up large resorts at Umiam, Shillong, and New Shillong, which will add premium hospitality options and generate employment for the youth of Meghalaya,” it stated.
It also mentioned about the laying of foundation stone of Shillong Ropeway, the state’s first passenger ropeway project, in December 2024.
The ropeway project along with experiential tourism initiatives in Mawsynram, Mandalgre, Marngar, and Wahkhen are all poised to provide job opportunities to local youth across various regions of the state, it said.
Strategic road projects are also under way to provide direct links between Shillong city and the emerging New Shillong Township, it added.
The release also mentioned about the state hosting culturally rich festivals such as Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival, Me’gong Festival in Tura, and Winter Tales, that have “gained national and international recognition” for promoting local art, music, cuisine, and heritage.
The expansion of Shillong Airport will ensure a further increase in the number of tourists that visit Meghalaya, it said.
“The government is also working towards operationalising Baljek Airport in Garo Hills region. Plans to commence flight services are under way, along with the proposed expansion of the runway to support broader connectivity,” it added.
