Shillong, Feb 20: The mortal remains of Shillong MP Dr Ricky AJ Syngkon was taken to his Nongsdier residence in Ri Bhoi district on Friday, escorted by top party leaders and supporters.
VPP chief Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit, KHADC chief Winston Tony Lyngdoh, party MLAs, MDCs, and a large crowd accompanied the casket to the residence.
Earlier, a prayer service was held at Pohkseh.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has announced a holiday for all districts under the Shillong parliamentary constituency on Saturday to allow people to attend the funeral and pay their last respects.
Dr Syngkon, one of the founders of the Voice of the People Party (VPP), passed away at Dr H Gordon Roberts Hospital on Thursday evening, shortly after collapsing while playing futsal in Shillong. He was declared dead at around 8:45 pm.
Top political leaders of the state have paid rich tribute to Dr Syngkon, with widespread grief over his sudden demise.
The departed leader will be laid to rest on Saturday.
