SIT confirms homicidal drowning in 4-year-old’s death

Shillong, Oct 13: A Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe has revealed that the death of four-year-old Insaphira Lyngdoh Mawnai who was found on September 15 was a result of homicidal drowning.

“SIT has established that the drowning was homicidal,” East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem told reporters on Monday.

A 13-old-neighbour was apprehended on September 18 and he is currently in a juvenile home after he admitted to taking the girl to a nearby construction site.

Stating that the the motive behind the act is still being investigated, Syiem said while it’s unclear whether the act was a result of an argument over a biscuit or an attempted sexual assault.

“There are many indications pointing to sexual assault attempt. The SIT will take some time to establish it but one thing is certain – the drowning was homicidal in nature,” he added.

The SP has ruled out the possibility of any other individuals being involved in the crime, confirming that the 13-year-old juvenile is the sole perpetrator.

The investigation is ongoing, and the police will provide a timeframe for filing the chargesheet once the investigation is complete, he stated.
