Shillong, Oct 13: Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma on Tuesday responded to VPP chief Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit’s allegation of inaction against North Shillong MLA Adelbert Nongrum, clarifying that the Assembly has no authority to suspend a legislator and can only make seating arrangements after being informed of action taken by a political party.
“No, suspension is not the prerogative of the Assembly Speaker. It is up to the political party or the legislature party to do whatever they like. It is their duty to inform us. We had taken note of it. We just have to allot separate seating, that’s all,” Sangma said. Clarifying on the earlier notification, the Speaker said, “Notified means the sitting was rearranged, that’s all we can do.”
