St Mary’s College Shillong gets new indoor sports venue, upgraded facilities

Shillong, April 10: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Friday inaugurated a new Indoor Sports Hall and upgraded amenities at St Mary’s College, Shillong, reaffirming that the Meghalaya government is working closely with educational institutions and extending support of nearly ₹1,200 crore annually.

The inauguration also included the rollout of equipment procured under the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA 2.0). The event was attended by Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui and MLA Dr M Ampareen Lyngdoh, along with officials from the education department.

Addressing the gathering, Sangma lauded institutions run by various missions and denominations, noting that their commitment to quality education continues to inspire the government. He emphasised that collaboration with such institutions is vital to improving access and outcomes in higher education.

The Chief Minister expressed satisfaction that government investments in the sector are yielding positive results and commended the college for fostering academic excellence alongside holistic student development.

Highlighting systemic challenges, Sangma said the education sector often loses sight of students while addressing broader issues. “When we began focusing on students as the core of education, we started seeing meaningful changes,” he said, urging stakeholders to prioritise student welfare in decision-making.

Reiterating the government’s commitment to reform, he said education remains central to the state’s long-term progress, though the full impact of policy decisions will take time to materialise. “We are determined to bring transformative changes despite the challenges,” he added.

Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA 2.0) is a centrally sponsored initiative of the Ministry of Education aimed at enhancing access, equity, and quality in higher education through infrastructure development, institutional reforms, and capacity building, particularly in underserved regions.
