State targets ₹500-cr excise revenue

QR code to track leakage of revenue in different products

Shillong, Oct 2: The state excise department has set a revenue target of Rs 500 crore for 2024-25 and is going to launch a QR code-based tracking system to plug any leakage.

Excise revenue is increasing every year and this year’s target is Rs 500 crore plus, Kyrmen Shylla minister in-charge Excise told reporters on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the department is in the process of implementing a QR code based tracking system to further improve its revenue generation by 5 to 10 per cent.

“Completion of the process may take two to three months,” the minister said.

Admitting that the time for holograms used in excise products is over, Shylla said the hologram supplier has been given extension till the time the QR code would be ready for implementation.

Vouching for the QR code, he said there would be no duplicacy of products.

“This is because one QR code will be for a bottle. If there is any duplicacy, the onus will be on the company concerned,” he said.

He said the new tracking system would not give any space for illegal activities while referring to an incident of bottling of illegal liquor.

Pointing out that present excise product rates are quite below the rate fixed by Assam counterparts, the said there is no question of loss of revenue to the state.

There was concern in the liquor industry due to recent trend of increasing price, bringing it almost on par with neighbouring Assam, resulting in drop in buyers from the neighbouring state.

Assam, being a big state, prices in Meghalaya should not be on par with the neighbouring state, Shylla said.
