Saree smuggling thwarted
Indian smugglers attempting to push in women’s clothing into neighbouring Bangladesh from the West Garo Hills border lost their consignment after alert police teams from Purakhasia outpost intercepted them on Tuesday night.
Purakhasia police on patrol duty near the border, sometime after 6 PM, intercepted a smuggling racket in which Indian smugglers were spotted attempting to navigate through the thick undergrowth carrying several large packets of items.
When challenged, the smugglers abandoned their goods and fled into the darkness. The goods were retrieved from the forests and on close inspection were found to contain over 200 ladies Sarees for illegal export into the neighbouring country.
On the same day, BSF troops on duty in adjoining Dalu border intercepted three trucks carrying sixty heads of cattle that were enroute to be smuggled into Bangladesh for consumption.
