Shillong, July 17: The Meghalaya High Court has ordered the transfer of investigation and seizure of CCTV footage in connection with the alleged suicide of a minor girl following her interrogation at the Women Police Station, Nongpoh.
Hearing a petition filed by Anius Majhong, Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere directed the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Ri-Bhoi district to “forthwith seize the footage of the CCTV cameras inside and outside the Police Station of 22.06.2026 from 12 noon to 11 pm.”
The footage is to be seized under a panchnama and kept in safe custody.
The petition was registered after the uncle of the deceased alleged human rights violations by Women Police officers during interrogation.
Noting that officers of the same station were probing the FIR, Amicus Curiae S Sen submitted that the “very officers, who are under scrutiny and allegedly responsible for the minor girl committing suicide, hail from that very same Police Station.”
Accepting the submission, the Court directed the SP to “forthwith transfer the investigation to the nearest Police Station and entrust the investigation to a Senior Police Officer.”
The SP has also been asked to “personally monitor the investigation” and to remain present in court on the next date.
The bench further ordered that “the officers concerned of the Women Police Station at Nongpoh, who are facing allegations will not be associated with the investigation pertaining to the case and that they will not contact the deceased’s family, in any way.”
The DCPO, Nongpoh has been asked to file an affidavit on whether he was informed about the minor being brought to the station.
The State, represented by AAG K Khan, submitted a report from the DSP, Women Police Station, Nongpoh, which will be filed by way of affidavit.
The bench further took on record a report on the visit to Williamnagar Jail submitted by Amicus Curiae T Yangi B.
With the Amicus citing “personal difficulty,” the matter has been adjourned to August 10, 2026.
