Synjuk seeks safety measures during 4-lane work

Shillong, Aug 22: The traditional body Synjuk Ki Nongsynshar Shnong Ka Upper Shillong has alleged delay and poor construction work by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) on Umshyrpi-7th Mile stretch of the Shillong-Dawking four-lane road project.

The Synjuk convened a meeting on Thursday at Nongkseh community hall to discuss the inconveniences faced by the people of the area and resolved to pursue the issues concerning the ongoing project.

“When dismantling or destroying the retaining wall near Umshyrpi Bridge, safety measures should be taken to ensure the safety of the local residents and the pedestrians. Moreover; it should also not have any effect on the existing road or cause any major traffic jams,” it said.

The Synjuk also expressed concern over the potential impact of dismantling of the water reservoir of Lummawbah village and safety of people fetching drinking water and washing clothes in the nearby washing shed.

It accused the NHIDCL of failing to address the issue of potholes on Umshyrpi-7th Mile stretch despite the assurance given during a joint inspection on June 17. This has resulted in heavy traffic jams and inconvenience to the public.

The traditional body also pointed out that link roads to villages, which were agreed upon during the joint inspection, have been left unattended, causing huge inconvenience to local residents, students, and traders.
