Harijan bodies meet CS, hopeful of solution

Shillong, Sept 26:Two organisations representing issues related to the people living in the Harijan Colony here, which is under a process relocation, have expressed the hope that the vexed issue will be solved sooner or later.

Following “constructive meeting” with a chief secretary DP Wahlang on Wednesday, the representatives of Harijan Panchayat Committee (HPC) and Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) said expressed confidence over solution to the issue of government plan to relocate 342 families from Them Iew Mawlong.

The chief secretary will submit a report on the outcome of the meeting.

Addressing media persons, SGPC activist Jagmohan Singh said, “We had a constructive meeting and we are hopeful that the problem of the residents of Punjabi lane will be solved sooner or later.”

He said the SGPC is in solidarity with the Sikh community people who had come from Punjab to Meghalaya around 200 years ago.

“We are here to help the government to resolve the problem in an amicable and proper manner,” he said while adding that the delegation was not fully satisfied and raised some concerns which can be resolved.

He, however, refused to give details of the meeting with the chief secretary.

The government had earlier rejected HPC’s proposal dated 25 April 2022 that sought 200 sq mt land to each of the 342 families within European Ward besides bearing the cost of construction of their homes.

On August 31, 2022, the state government had announced its decision to construct housing flats in a 2.5-acre area belonging to Shillong Municipal Board for relocation of the 342 families.
