Shillong, Aug 8: The United Democratic Party (UDP) has elected KHADC opposition leader Titosstarwell Chyne as its new state general secretary of the party.
This was announced by the UDP supremo Metbah Lyngdoh after chairing a meeting of the party’s central executive committee (CEC) held here on Friday.
“We have unanimously approved the name of Titosstarwell Chyne as the new general secretary of the party,” Lyngdoh told reporters.
Whether the CEC also discussed on cabinet reshuffle, the president however said few leaders have raised the issue but the CEC is not the platform to discuss this subject. “Therefore, we taken note of their suggestions during the meeting,” he added.
Welcoming the party’s decision, Chyne said, “I express my gratitude to the CEC for finding me fit to be the new general secretary of the party.”
The new general secretary has highlighted that his top priority would be to further strengthening the party organization and ensuring close coordination between the elected representatives and the party.
“I assure that I will fulfill the responsibility bestowed upon me,” Chyne said, adding that the party’s functioning had been affected over the past few months following the resignation of former general secretary Jemino Mawthoh.
However, he expressed optimism about the party’s future and said, “I am confident especially after meeting the presidents and secretaries of the different districts that we will be able to further strengthen the party organization. There will be a close coordination between elected representatives and the party from now on.”
Chyne also addressed allegations of the party disconnecting with grassroot workers during non-election periods, stating that the party has action plans to build connections with workers in constituencies without elected representatives.
“To say there is disconnection doesn’t arise in constituencies where party has elected representatives but in constituencies without elected representatives, no doubt we are facing some challenges as it is difficult for unsuccessful candidates to remain in touch with the people for whole five years. But already have action plans to build a connection between grassroot workers in constituencies without elected representatives and the party,”he concluded.
