Shillong, May 19: The ruling National People’s Party (NPP) on Monday got a shot in the arm with the joining of over 250 members of other political parties, including Trinamool Congress (TMC), Congress and BJP in East Garo Hills district.

Chaired by GHADC MDC from Darugre, Henen R Marak, the induction took place at the residence of Rongjeng MLA Jim M Sangma in presence of cabinet minister and NPP state working president Marcuise N Marak, former Songsak MLA and current co-chairman of State Planning Board Nihim D Shira, and other prominent figures from East Garo Hills district.

Most of the new NPP members hailed from TMC with many of them led by former Rongjeng MLA Sengnam M Marak.

Former Rongjeng MLA Desang Sangma and former MLA Francis Pondit R Sangma also pledged their support to the NPP.
Addressing the gathering, Desang Sangma candidly shared that he initially had reservations about the leadership of chief minister Conrad K Sangma.

However, after closely observing the developmental progress in both Rongjeng and the state over the past few years, he became convinced of the chief minister’s capable leadership and decided to officially align himself with the NPP, he said.
Francis Pondit R Sangma expressed gratitude to minister Marcuise N Marak for personally inviting him to join the party.

“In a democracy, it is our duty to participate in politics. With our collective support, leaders can work harder for the progress of our state and our constituencies,” he said.
In his address, Sengnam M Marak reflected on his longstanding personal relationship with Jim M Sangma, dating back to their time in student unions and church groups. He emphasized that their only separation had been political.

Nihim D Shira welcomed the new members to the party and advised all NPP members to maintain unity and avoid misunderstandings for the greater good of the party and the people.
Minister Marcuise N Marak highlighted the various developmental projects and initiatives undertaken by the NPP government under the leadership of Conrad K Sangma, pointing to visible improvements in Rongjeng constituency.

Speaking to media, Rongjeng MLA Jim M Sangma said, “This will tremendously strengthen our position in the upcoming MDC and MLA elections.”
