Shillong, Apr 22: A top leader of a banned terrorist organisation of Manipur was arrested from Byrnihat in Ri-Bhoi district, police said on Tuesday.

Ri-Bhoi police picked up Khundongbam Herojit Meitei, the finance secretary of Kangleipak Communist party (People’s War Group) [KCP(PWG)] from a rented house at Nongthymmai, 15th Mile, Byrnihat around 8:30 pm on Monday.

He is involved in subversive activities like extortion, etc., in Meghalaya as well as other neighbouring states, Ri-Bhoi SP Vivekananda Rathore said on Tuesday.

Two mobile phones and other incriminating materials were seized from his possession.

During interrogation, Meitei had admitted to be a member of KCP(PWG) and his involvement in collecting money on behalf of the organisation, the SP said.

“It appears, prima facie, that he was hiding in the Assam-Meghalaya border to avoid getting arrested by the security forces, which are presently taking strict action on various militant organisations involved in creating law and order problems in Manipur,” he said.

Meitei is also suspected to be involved in criminal conspiracy with some Myanmar and Nepal based militant organisations.

Last year, he was arrested in Manipur for possession of illegal firearm and also in Dimapur in 2018 in a drug trafficking case.

“Meghalaya Police is keeping a sharp watch on all anti-social and anti-national elements and strict action is being taken as per law,” the SP said.
