Shillong, June 18: Night-hour traffic restrictions imposed at Umshyrpi bridge have been withdrawn, following completion of some major work on the new bridge over Umshyrpi river at Rilbong in the city.
With withdrawal of traffic curbs, vehicular movement would be allowed from both directions during the night hours, informed East Khasi Hills SP (Traffic), K Prasad.
The traffic restrictions were imposed on the bridge from 10 PM to 5 AM to facilitate launch of girders for the new bridge, leading to significant traffic diversions and affecting a large number of commuters in the past few days.

Meanwhile, the bridge work is nearing completion, barring some minor welding work that will continue, but won’t require any further traffic restriction, officials involved in the project said.
Earlier, vehicles travelling between Upper Shillong and MES Point via Umshyrpi Bridge, as well as those from Lumdiengjri/Old Cherra heading to Upper Shillong, were rerouted through alternative routes such as Pomlakrai, Laitkor, Madanrting, and Laitumkhrah.
Emergency services were exempted from these diversions.
