Tura MP apprised of faculty shortage in NEIGRIHMS

Shillong, Sept 10: The North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) has apprised Congress MP Saleng A Sangma, who was nominated to its governing council recently, of the various issues concerning the premier central hospital in the city.

The Tura MP, during his first visit to the hospital on Monday following his nomination, interacted with the faculty members and staff including heads of various departments and sections.

Briefing on the current status of NEIGRIHMS, the hospital director Prof Nalin Mehta raised concern over shortage of faculty, long overdue cadre review, parity with AIIMS New Delhi and PGIMER, Chandigarh, and requirement of land to make a Guest House for needy patients.

As the entire region “looked up to NEIGRIHMS as it was the best hospital and teaching institution in the area,” the MP said he assured of taking up the matter along with MPs from North East cutting across party lines.

He also emphasized the need for conferring the status of Institute of National Importance (INI) to NEIGRIHMS to help overcome numerous obstacles.

Sangma expressed his happiness over the immense benefit rendered by NEIGRIHMS to Meghalaya and the entire north-eastern region.

The MP assured that he would take up NEIGRIHMS’s request for allotment of a parcel of land to build a patient guest house near NEIGRIHMS on priority with the Govt of Meghalaya, to cater to the needs of patients coming from faraway places to seek treatment at NEIGRIHMS.

He also promised that he would take up the issues of impediments to delivery and supply of medicines and high-end medical equipment as per local rules and regulations and resolve them after discussing the matter with the concerned district councils.

During his visit, the MP also met representatives of the NEIGRIHMS staff as well as the nursing associations.
