Two persons die by suicide in Shillong

Man hangs self in police station campus

Shillong, April 23: Two persons died allegedly by suicide, including one at a police station, in Shillong on Thursday morning.

One Mithung Gurung (38) from Lumparing allegedly hanged himself from a flagpole on the premises of Laban police station in the wee hours of Thursday.

A home guard volunteer on duty first saw the body hanging from the flagpole, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police (SP) Vivek Syiem told reporters.

“In fact, the home guard volunteer had seen this person outside the gate but nobody expected that… hanging could happen in a few seconds only… it happened so fast,” he said.

According to the SP, the person entered the police station at 6.43 pm and his body was discovered within seven minutes.

Terming the incident “unfortunate”, he said the person could be mentally disturbed and with a history of alcoholism.

Asked about CCTV footage, he admitted that the CCTV inside the police station is currently malfunctioned and effort is on to get it rectified.

However, he said, police collected footage from other CCTVs in the neighbourhood, which took time to identify the person.

In the other incident at 3rd Mile, Upper Shillong, one Vijay Kumar Singh (21) from Riatsohkhlur, 3rd Mile allegedly committed suicide by hanging. His body was discovered around 5 am on Thursday.

Terming the case prima facie suicide, the SP said the body was in a sitting position on the ledge of the window with a rope around the neck.

“It all indicates that it is partially hanging. There was no injury on his body,” he said.

However, he said, it will be confirmed only after post-mortem of the body.
