Guwahati, Nov 22: More than three years after the mob attack in a COVID facility in Assam’s Hojai district, in which a doctor was grievously injured, the District and Session Judge of Hojai on Friday sentenced 12 persons to 10-year rigorous imprisonment.
The incident took place at Udali Model Hospital in Hojai district on June 1, 2021.
The court also imposed a total fine of Rs 2,23,500.
The convicted persons are- Kamar Uddin, Hillal Uddin, Gulnehar Begum, Raijur Rahman, Jiabur Rahman, Makbul, Foijur Rahman, Abdur Rahman, Taibur RahmanJeshim Uddin alias papu Borbhuyan, Nazirul Islam and Mofizur Rahman.
They were charges in connection with Lanka police station case no 370/2021 under sections 120B, 143, 342, 333, 307, 353, and 447 of IPC read with section 3(2) PDPP, section 3 (3) of Epidemic Disease Act and section 5, 6 of Assam Medical Services Person of medical Service Institute Act.
The court further acquitted 21 accused as they have been in jail for more than a year in connection with the case.
Based on a complaint filed by the deputy superintendent of Udali Model Hospital, Dr Imran Ali, the police registered a case and arrested all the accused persons. The police also filed chargesheet in the case within 29 days of the incident.
A group of people assaulted Dr Seuj Kumar Senapati, Dr Nageswar Choudhury, nurse Lalita Bharali and UBC Kunja Mohan Nath following the death of a Covid patient Giasuddin Mazumdar (45) at Udali Model Hospital on June 1, 2021. They also vandalized the hospital and closed the functioning of the facility in the area.
In the gruesome incident, Dr Seuj Kumar Senapati was mercilessly punched, kicked, and pounded with metal trash cans and bricks, by the relatives of the Covid patient, allegedly due to oxygen shortage.
The group also extensively damaged the hospital due to which the hospital had to close its functioning for more than a year.
