Umiam Bridge Bypass to open for heavy vehicles  

No parking of night buses anywhere in city except at ISBT Mawiong  

Shillong, May 12: The Umiam Bridge bypass will be inaugurated on May 13, opening the route for movement of commercial vehicles, including night buses, from Umiam towards Shillong with effect from May 14.

Ahead of the inauguration, East Khasi Hills district administration on Tuesday said the newly constructed bypass will be opened for traffic movement subject to a set of restrictions and conditions.

Commercial vehicles and night buses will be allowed to ply through the bypass only between 9:00 PM and 7:00 AM daily.

The administration has also barred the movement of articulated vehicles on the route.

Only rigid vehicles of up to three axles, with two tyres in the front axle and eight tyres in two tandem axles at the rear, will be permitted on the bypass, subject to a maximum gross vehicle weight of 28.5 tonnes.

Meanwhile, all night buses have been directed to mandatorily park at the Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT), Mawiong.

The order further stated that parking of night buses will not be allowed at SRGT, Polo, the Shillong Municipal Board parking lot at Dhankheti, along Itshyrwat-New Shillong Road, Shillong-Jowai Road, or anywhere else within the city except at ISBT, Mawiong.

The district administration has directed the police, transport authorities, PWD (Roads), NHAI/NHIDCL officials and other concerned departments to ensure strict enforcement of the new traffic regulations.
