US consul general meets Assam Governor, discusses academic ties and investment opportunities

Guwahati, Feb 28: The Consul General of the United States in Kolkata, Kathy Giles Diaz, met with Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya at Raj Bhavan on Thursday to discuss a range of issues, including economic growth, tourism, cultural heritage, and academic collaboration between Assam and the U.S.

Governor Acharya highlighted Assam’s rapid growth in tourism and other sectors, emphasizing the joint efforts of the state and central governments in fostering a business-friendly environment for foreign investments. He acknowledged Diaz’s participation in the Advantage Assam 2.0 event, stating that it underscored the strong ties between Assam and the U.S.

During the discussion, the Governor urged the U.S. Consul General to establish a U.S. Consulate office in Guwahati to facilitate travel and diplomatic relations for the large number of people from Northeast India who visit the U.S. annually. Additionally, he requested the creation of a U.S. Information Service (USIS) Library in Guwahati to enhance educational and cultural exchanges.

Kathy Giles Diaz praised Assam’s abundant natural resources and its skilled and dynamic workforce. She emphasized the need for increased student exchange programs and academic collaborations between Assam and the U.S. to strengthen bilateral ties.

Governor Acharya also invited Diaz to visit Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, renowned for its wildlife and scenic landscapes.

The U.S. Consul General was accompanied by Tinku Roy, Political Affairs Specialist from the U.S. Consulate General, Kolkata.
