Violence erupts in Jaintia Hills after results declaration

Jowai, Feb 24: Violence has broken out in a village in West Jaintia Hills after declaration of election results with alleged supporters of the opposition VPP party attacking the home of a former village headman.

According to police, VPP supporters under Sutnga Narwan went in a mob and attacked the house of the former headman of Narwan village in retaliation for not supporting their party.

The VPP with 8 seats lost the JHADC elections to the NPP (13 seats).

Stones were pelted and attempts were made to damage the house and harm the inmates of the house, sending shock waves across the state over the nature of the political retribution for an election result.

“We have deployed adequate forces in the village and the situation is now under control,” informed East Jaintia Hills police.
