Williamnagar, April 2: The body of a 22 year old youth who died in a fall in East Garo Hills district two years ago, in what was passed off as an accident, has been exhumed by authorities on Wednesday after his grieving father suspecting foul play moved the high court and obtained an order for a thorough examination of the remains of his son.
Under strict supervision by an executive magistrate, police and crime scene personnel and in the presence of clan members, the grave of Weghara R Marak was opened up and his body exhumed in a cemetery in Williamnagar town.

The on the spot post-mortem was conducted by forensic expert Dr. A. R. Marak (Forensic Medicine) from Tura Civil Hospital.
Weghara, son of Salseng M Sangma, lost his life on February 25, 2023, after reportedly falling from Jadi Dare, a waterfall over 120 feet high, in Dorengkigre village, 12 kms from Williamnagar, located across the Simsang river. On that fateful day, he had visited the waterfall on an outing with a group of friends when tragedy struck.
But the father of Weghara refused to accept the accident theory citing injury marks on his son’s body. He questioned how a fall from such a height could result in cuts on the right side of the temple and a deep wound at the back of the head, while the rest of the body bore no injuries.

He also pointed out that the clothes and wristwatch worn by his son were recovered without any signs of damage despite the fall from such a height.
Unhappy with the report on his son’s death, the bereaved father petitioned the High Court which gave an order for the exhumation and on the spot post mortem to identify the causes leading to the death of Weghara Marak.
The forensic report to determine the exact cause of death is expected to be submitted to the court.
