Shillong, Sept 30: First time Voice of the People Party MDC from Nongthymmai Winston Tony Lyngdoh was elected unopposed as the new chief executive member (CEM) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).
The election, necessitated by the resignation of former CEM Shemborlang Rynjah due to health reasons, saw no opposition candidates come forward to challenge Lyngdoh’s nomination.
This was announced by the KHADC Chairman Strong Pillar Kharjana during the special session of the council held on Tuesday.
Lyngdoh was escorted to the CEM’s chair by fellow executive member Powell Lyngdoh and Opposition Leader Titosstarwell Chyne.
The felicitation ceremony was participated by almost all the MDCs including 17 MDCs from the ruling VPP.
Kharjana has expressed his confidence in the newly elected leadership, saying, ‘I am confident that under your stewardship, we will have a stable Executive Committee that will prioritize the people’s welfare. The EC will also work collaboratively with the opposition MDCs.”
He congratulated the people of Nongthymmai on electing a capable representative and noted the constituency’s penchant for electing prominent leaders, from a former minister to the new CEM of the KHADC.
Addressing the house, newly elected CEM Winston Tony Lyngdoh expressed his deep appreciation for the trust placed in him, while also acknowledging the resignation of his predecessor, Shemborlang Rynjah.
“I am deeply saddened by his resignation, particularly given his health concerns. His experience and guidance will be greatly missed. I urge him to prioritize his health and return to his responsibilities when he is able.”
Lyngdoh thanked the ruling MDCs, opposition leader, and members for their good wishes and the VPP for nominating him as CEM. He also expressed gratitude to the people of Nongthymmai for electing him as their representative.
Regarding the allegation that there is a gap between the EC and opposition MDCs, Lyngdoh clarified that Shemborlang Rynjah’s work speaks for itself, despite his reserved nature.
“Our doors are open to all members, and I look forward to working collaboratively as a team. We will not shy away from addressing key issues and will continue to uphold the glory of the KHADC.”
Lyngdoh concluded by requesting prayers for Shemborlang Rynjah’s speedy recovery and reaffirming his commitment to serving the people.
Earlier, Leader of Opposition Titosstarwell Chyne expressed concerns about the perceived divide between the previous Executive Committee and opposition members, suggesting that it hindered effective collaboration.
UDP MDC from Nongpoh, Rona Khymdeit, echoed similar sentiments, noting that the sudden resignation of the former CEM has raised apprehensions among the public.
She urged the VPP, given its absolute majority, to prioritize stability and smooth functioning of the council over the next four years.
Khymdeit emphasized that the council’s effectiveness was compromised due to the resignation and advised the new CEM to actively seek input and suggestions from opposition members to ensure inclusive governance.
