Police act on public complaints about obscene acts, solicitation, public nuisance

Shillong, April 12: In a major crackdown against flesh trade in Shillong, police have detained 16 alleged sex workers, who were found approaching passersby and soliciting in public areas, including near religious sites, in the city.

A case under 110 Meghalaya Police Act was registered against the 16 “sex workers”, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said on Sunday.

They were arrested during a raid conducted around 11.30 pm on Saturday.

The operation, led by Additional SP Traffic Lovish Garg and SDPO Pyrursla B Wanswet, covered areas including Police Bazar, Presbyterian Church (Police Bazar), IGP Point, etc.

The SP said police acted on complaints received from the public about obscene acts, solicitation, and public nuisance caused by sex workers in these areas.

During the raid, the SP said, the “sex workers” were seen operating in the public places “engaging in prostitution and soliciting by approaching passersby, making gestures, and attempting to attract customers…”

He said their acts have caused “annoyance, obstruction, and disturbance” to the general public and also “affected the sanctity of nearby religious places and important public locations”.
