2 killed as choir group meets with accident

Shillong, Jan 6: Tragedy struck a church choir group travelling to attend a service when their vehicle fell into a deep gorge, killing two persons and injuring several others, at Kynrut in West Khasi Hills district.

The accident took place when the Bolero pickup carrying the Kynrud Presbyterian Church choir veered off the road, allegedly due to break failure, and plunged into the 100-metre-deep gorge on Sunday.

The driver and one choir member succumbed to their injuries.

The choir group was en route to a church service at Nongrilong Presbyterian Church in Mawdem under Mawthadraishan constituency.

According to Kynrud headman Clement Nongsej the news of the accident reached the village around 11 am.

Villagers and emergency responders acted promptly to rescue the injured and rushed them to hospitals, including Kynrud PHC, Mairang Civil Hospital, and Shillong.

Challenging terrain of the accident site hampered rescue operations, but villagers worked tirelessly through the night to ensure the injured received medical attention.
