40 ‘illegal’ workers pushed back

Shillong, Apr 2: Activists of Jaintia National Council (JNC) on Wednesday pushed back over 40 “illegal” labourers working in a cement factory in East Jaintia Hills “to their place of origin”.

According to JNC, the migrant workers did not possess labour license during its “inspection” conducted at Amrit Cement on Wednesday.

The JNC team, led by its chairman Ency Shadap and secretary Mebanteilang Sukhlain, also warned all factories against hiring individuals from outside for work that can be done by local indigenous workers.

As part of its “Save Jaintia Mission”, the JNC will conduct more such drives to detect “illegal workers” in factories in the area.

The organisation, meanwhile, urged the state government to implement policies that prioritise the employment of local residents, particularly in factories situated in Jaintia Hills.
