Hailstorm hits Tura, CM orders fast relief measures

Shillong, March 15: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has directed the authorities to ensure supply of relief materials for those affected by hailstorm in separate parts of the state.

The chief minister issued the directive after holding a review meeting with senior officials on Sunday.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister directed officials to closely monitor the ground situation and ensure that immediate relief and assistance reach the affected households without delay.

He also instructed the district administrations to take urgent steps to restore and maintain essential utilities, including electricity and water supply, at the earliest.

Officials were asked to remain vigilant and coordinate with local authorities to assess the extent of the damage and facilitate timely support for those impacted by the hailstorm.

Hailstorm strikes Tura

Meanwhile, a severe hailstorm struck Tura and nearby areas around 3 AM on Sunday, leaving a trail of damage to homes, vehicles, and crops.

The storm, reported to be the third bout of severe weather during the night, brought unusually large hailstones—some said to be as big as golf balls.

The heavy hail pelted the town for about 20 minutes, puncturing tin roofs and damaging several vehicles parked along roadsides and in open compounds without protective covering.

The review meeting was attended by Chief Secretary, Commissioner & Secretary of Revenue and Disaster Management Department, and Deputy Commissioners of the affected districts.
