Shillong, Feb 26: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has highlighted the significant strides made by state government in healthcare, announcing construction of 51 health centres and upgrading 554 others in the past eight years.

“We really are investing a lot in healthcare,” Sangma said while replying to the budget discussion in the Assembly.

“772 hospital beds were added, 479 specialists and doctors were added through the MMSRB, 76 doctors were trained to be specialists and 6,700 village health councils were activated.”

The Chief Minister acknowledged that despite progress, more needs to be done, particularly in the safe motherhood programme.
