KHNAM questions decision making Agatha child rights panel chief

Shillong, Sept 8 : The appointment of former Tura MP Agatha K Sangma as the new chairperson of the Meghalaya State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MSCPCR) has been questioned by the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM).

“The Party expresses its opposition in open display of political power by the MDA Government,” KHNAM working president Thomas Passah said in a statement on Saturday.

“Appointment of advisors, chairmen, vice-chairmen etc., at the expense of the exchequer has already in the limelight to which the general public has expressed concern and dissatisfaction. Now with this latest appointment, it seems clear that the MDA Government is all out for nepotism and political appointment to forcibly hold on to power. This is total dictatorship,” he said.

Further, Passah said, “We are also surprised to know that James Sangma is also the key person in this decision wherein he has submitted a written proposal to the Government. How can a general public have any say in government decision. We know that other political parties who are in the MDA will not object to such nepotism since they too have their share of political appointments.”

Stating that as per the Government notification dated 10 July 2013 it clearly states that “A Chairperson should be a person of eminence and who has done outstanding work for promoting welfare of children,” Passah said, “We do not see that Agatha Sangma qualifies for the appointment. We also feel that such appointments will jeopardize the welfare of Children in the state.”
